Spyfu Review

Spyfu as the name suggests is a “Spy” tool that gathers data on your competitors. It allows you to browse through various metrics such as your competitors, Daily Budget, Clicks Per Day, Keywords, Organic Keywords, Paid Keywords, and many more interesting facts and figures on them. They have been around for quiet a while, and have been constantly improving their tool, and now have raised the trial membership prices from $6.95 to $14.95 for 3 days.

The free version of Spyfu isn’t very useful. It gives only the “Top 10″ metrics in the free version. But, it comes to life as soon as you upgrade your membership. Lets take a look at the example after we typed in Dog Training:
So far so good. If you scroll down the bottom, if gives you other metrics such as who those Top 21 Advertisers are, Organic Listings, and on the right hand side displays what other keywords competitors bought along with dog training, related concepts and so on. Also, Spyfu easily lets you export this data in readable CSV or excel format.
Now, I’m done with the praises - let me start with some problems I’ve encountered with Spyfu over the last several months. I’ve often found that Spyfu data isn’t always accurate - so making Spyfu my primary keyword tool is out of question. If you are looking for a primary keyword tool - I suggest you headover and get Keycompete instead.
Now, who is Spyfu useful for really? The answer is that Spyfu in two scenarios. You already have a list of keywords - and want to expand on it a bit further to make sure you’re not missing out on anything. By the way, trust me on this - you could miss just “5″ keywords that generate a lot of impressions and clicks, and convert great - and there you are missing out on thousands of dollars of revenue just because you didn’t target those keywords.
Anyways, back to where we were. Another use that I see of Spyfu is lets you get the “Top Organic” competitor data very easily, and that section is highly accurate.
Now, here’s a little trick for PPC. You could download your “Top Organic Competitors” domain list, and put them in your ppc campaigns. This way you get extremely cheap clicks, and know that they are very relevant to your campaigns too.
A new feature that Spyfu has recently added is “SpyFu Kombat”. What this feature lets you do is compare websites and see how your website, or two websites compare to each other in terms of their PPC, and Organic keyword strength. I actually really liked this feature, especially the overlay part where it tells me which keywords overlay among the same two domains.
Conclusion
Spyfu is at least worth a trial at $14.95 with the features it has to offer. If you like what you see in the trial, then extend your membership.
